5.2 Public Health Importance of Safe Drinking Water

Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock. It is stored in and moves slowly through geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks called aquifers.
The benefits of clean water and having plenty of safe water to drink are well known. Most of us have experienced the feeling of not getting enough water; when we feel sluggish and light-headed from being dehydrated.
Many common health problems can be avoided by all of us if we simply drink more water.
Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water helps to flush out wastes from our bodies.
Water is a transport medium for the nutrients our bodies need.
Body temperature (perspiration) is regulated by the amount of available water in our bodies.
Water also regulates the pH balance and supports a multitude of physiological processes.
Being well hydrated elevates our energy levels and can help alleviate headaches.
Severe dehydration causes a multitude of health problems, not the least of which are fatigue, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, weakness, and loss of energy.

Clean drinking water is essential to public health. Contaminated water is a grave health risk and, despite great progress over the past 40 years, continues to threaten U.S. communities’ health and quality of life. Our water resources still lack basic protections, making them vulnerable to pollution from fracking, farm runoff, industrial discharges and neglected water infrastructure.

The Clean Water Act (CWA) establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters. The basis of the CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, but the Act was significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name with amendments in 1972.

  1. Ali,

Very good information about clean drinking water. I never knew that it can alleviate headaches. Water also replenishes skin tissue and boosts metabolic rate.

  2. I agree, Ali! I think it is so important to get plenty of water to maintain and improve health. I don't think many people realize how beneficial water can be to help alleviate things like a cold or, like you mentioned, headaches. Drinking plenty of water is great for our immune systems, for our skin, and for our digestive systems.
