M6.4 Blog: Industrial Farming
· Your thoughts
about the vanishing of bees (what else have you heard/seen about this issue?)
Honeybees live together in hives and collect
flower pollen for food, and in doing so play a crucial role in pollinating
crops. In fact, honeybees are essential for the production of a third or more
of the food we eat.
Vanishing of the Bees examines the issue of Colony
Collapse Disorder, which has caused startling numbers of honeybees to disappear
in recent years. Scientists have not yet identified a specific factor as the
root cause of Colony Collapse Disorder, the general understanding is that this
phenomenon is related to bringing bees into the monoculture farming system.
This dramatic phenomenon needs to be stopped,
so we need to take an action by different levels including (finding a modeling
farm where honey bees can live in harmony with environment, stop home pesticide
use, plant a garden, and raise awareness).

· Were you able
to discover if there is a factory farm near you? Were you already aware of
farms near you? What do you think about this?
I live in Collin County, Texas, according to the (factoryfarmmap.org),
There is no factory farm near where I live, I think that we need to raise the
awareness about the factory farms and the health risks related to it.

Composting: Do you currently compost? Have
you composted in the past? Do you know anyone who composts? Would you consider
composting, after learning about its benefits from the movie?
Unfortunately, I do not compost and I don’t know anyone who
composts.
After learning the benefits of composting, I would like to start
compost in order to enrich soils, helping retain moisture and suppress plant
disease and pests.
Ali,
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know that there are no Factory Farms in your area. They are widely popular in California, unfortunately.
I am on the same page and agree with you when it comes to composting. I will definitely consider it!
Hi Ali,
ReplyDeleteYou are right. There should be a farm for bees where they can live in harmony. More people should know the effects of pesticide use and how it is a danger to insects and us.
