Personal Care Products (M2.4 Blog Assignment: Jane Hoolihan and Advocacy Organizations on Toxics)
Jane Hoolihan Advocacy Organization on Toxics in Personal
Products video shocked us with the information about the chemicals in the
cosmetics and the harmful effect that can produce.
From the speaker, we
know now that we have around 125000 chemicals in the cosmetics and the women
are using around 12 products on daily basis which contain around 175 chemicals that
they are exposed to, and the teenagers are using around 16 products daily, we
are exposed through skin absorption, inhalation, and ingestion of these
chemicals.
Less than 20% of these chemicals are tested for safety these
chemicals have terrible effects including carcinogenic factors, interfere with
body’s natural hormones like reproductive and thyroid, and other serious
harmful effects.
Some examples of the chemicals and the bad effect that cause
are:
1-
Formaldehyde is considered
as carcinogenic.
2-
1,4 dioxan is cancer
causing chemical like breast cancer.
3-
Toxic Tri is considered as carcinogenic
and allergic.
4-
Toluene is considered toxic
and affect kidney and liver
5-
Dibutyl phthalate affect
thyroid function.
6-
Triclosan is thyroid and reproductive
hormone disrupter.
7-
Coal tar cause cancer,
human respiratory toxicant, and allergic reaction.
8-
Skin lightening creams
decrease melanin pigments and cause skin cancer.
9-
Fragrance increase breast
cancer and prostate cancer and also cause reproductive toxicity.
On
personal level, we can take an action to decrease our exposure to the chemicals
through:
1-
Use less products and less
often.
2-
Read the ingredients label
and compare it.
3-
Skip fragrance containing
fragrance as an ingredient.
4-
Make our safe cosmetics by ourselves.
5-
Buy from companies making
safer products or they are committed for safer products or they disclose their
ingredients.
Other
action we can take include
-
Take part in online action.
-
Participate in in our
community action.
-
Speak up for the safe
cosmetic act.
-
Donate to the non-profit
organization.
Finally,
we need to keep push on the legislators and the government to reform the policy
and change the law to make the laws able to protect us by banning the
carcinogenic and toxicants ingredients for the cosmetic products, give more
power for the FDA to be able to assess the safety of pre-marketing products,
authority for mandatory recalls, and force the companies to disclose the
ingredients of the cosmetic products.
You are absolutely right about pushing the legislators and the government to reform the policy and change the law to force companies to disclose the ingredients of the cosmetic products. It will force companies to put better ingredients in their products.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, team! I believe the strongest impact for change will come from legislation. I think it is necessary and urgent. I was surprised at how little regulation there is.
ReplyDeleteAli, I am glad you included all the facts and science!
