Vulnerable Populations
Why are we still
ONLY focused on sedentary lifestyles and diets when addressing obesity in
the US? Why are we not also looking at ways to decrease exposures to
those chemicals that may be contributing to the epidemic?
Our problem is that we have
different approach to the problem like the obesity which was really well
addressed in the lecture of Dr. Rishi Manchanda, he said that instead of
bringing people to clinics and check the symptoms, we need to see where it
starts and from where the health issue begins like (home, work, play). The environment
has great impact on health, if we have bad environment and many risk factors
and predisposing factors are exposing our body like the chemicals, we have
health problem soon or later either from the direct effect or from the
accumulative effect. Home, work, play have twice impact on health than the
genetic code and 60% of preventable death are due to the same cause.
From watching the video (little
things matter) we discover that our bodies are filled with chemicals like
mercury, lead. Ops. The children are daily exposed to the chemicals and they
have it in their bodies, these chemicals are poising the children body, causing
death by time and also decrease their brain development and decrease their IQ
level.
We are exposed to numerous chemicals
every day from environmental sources such as air and water pollution,
pesticides, cleaning products, and food additives. Some of these chemicals are
threats to human health, but tracing exposures and determining what levels of
risk they pose is a painstaking process. As public health practitioner we need
to focus more on the source of these chemical, how to decrease it in our
environment to be less exposed and what
kind of regulations we use to reduce exposures, and how we manage associated
human health risks.
Ali yes we do need to check our homes, work, and play. It is important to know what we are being exposed to in the first place instead of only checking symptoms and making temporary diagnosis. We need to cure the problem altogether.
